Worth seeing. The mountain farm museum in Moos in Passeier.
A glimpse of bygone days
Frugal. Humble. Hard. That describes the life of mountain farmers in bygone days, which a small museum in Moos in Passeier is dedicated to.
Frugal. Humble. Hard. These three adjectives best describe the life of South Tyrolean mountain farmers in bygone days. A modest life, far removed from affluent society and its excesses, where different generations lived and worked together harmoniously. Until a few decades ago, only narrow trails led upwards into this rugged, archaic world of sacrifice and hard work. Hard work whose worth was hardly recognised back then. But we not only have nature, but also the mountain farmers to thank for the wonder-rich beauty of the South Tyrolean landscape. Day in and day out, they laboured to cultivate the land at great altitudes in harmony with nature.
Mountain farm museum at the Steinerhof in Moos im Passeiertal
The small mountain farm museum at the Steinerhof in rustic Moos im Passeiertal tells the story of this hard life spent in the solitude of the mountains. It was Alberich, the host, who created this historical gem in Alta Val Passiria/Hinterer Passeiertal. Cocooned in the embrace of the ancient walls, a wide range of objects and tools have been on display since 2019. Genuine treasures that can be traced back to the old mountain farms in the area and tell stories of the life of yesteryear.
Once a week, at 8.30 p.m. on Mondays, the “Indiana Jones of modern times”, as Alberich is lovingly called, guides fascinated visitors through the collection. Each exhibit – from the wooden chest to the sledge to the horseshoe – tells its own story. After the tour, the passionate collector treats his guests to homemade schnaps and a tasty “Marende” snack with Speck bacon and cheese. This journey into the past costs 22.00 euros per person, including the snack. You can register up until the day before the tour directly at the farm tavern.
