Near to Alpe Cimbra, there’s a place filled with special energy: the majestic Castel Beseno, which can be seen from far and wide. The mighty construction sits upon a gentle hill, standing quiet watch over the Vallagarina valley. The wonder-rich view from way up here extends from the awe-worthy peaks of Brenta to impressive Mt Baldo. And the view isn’t the only thing that’s worth admiring: so is the architecture of Trentino’s largest fortress.
A wealth of stories and history
This imposing defensive complex can trace its origins all the way back to the 12th century. To protect Vallagarina, it was built in a strategic location directly on the roads that connected the Germanic regions with the Italian peninsula. In the 16th century, the castle was renovated and extended to take on its present form. Over the years, Castel Beseno has been the scene of numerous battles, including the famous Battle of Calliano in 1487.
The mighty walls and towers of the fortress silently remind us of an eventful past. Of a time where the structure protected the valley from invaders. Today, you can admire the impressive battlements and visit the permanent exhibition to get a taste of fascinating history. A history that tells tale of military life in the Middle Ages. Little visitors will adore the special guided tours that give them the opportunity to take on the roles of knights and damsels.
